Welcome to Keokuk, Iowa
Iowa’s southernmost city, located on the tip of land between the confluence of the Mississippi and Des Moines Rivers, Keokuk is the southern gateway to Iowa’s Great River Road. Named for Chief Kiyo' kaga (1788-1848) later known as Keokuk, this friendly river town is home to Iowa’s only National Cemetery and is known as the “geode capital of the world” for the abundance of the unique crystalline formations found in the area. Keokuk’s hydroelectric power plant, built in 1913 during construction of U.S. Lock and Dam #19, was at the time the largest electricity generating plant in the world.
